Speaking at an economic forum in Miami, the American president denounced the lack of military support from his partners to secure the Strait of Hormuz, a critical point in global energy trade. “They just weren’t there,” he said, referring to the unanswered requests from Washington.
In a tone of reproach and warning, the White House tenant emphasized the financial burden borne by the United States within NATO. “We spend hundreds of billions of dollars to protect them (…) but in light of their actions, I suppose we no longer have to,” he declared, casting doubt on American commitment to the collective defense clause.
For several weeks, Donald Trump has been making increasingly hostile remarks against the Alliance, calling it a “paper tiger” and a “lick” on his Truth Social network, promising that Washington “will remember.” These statements come amidst heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, where maritime traffic is severely disrupted, causing a surge in energy prices.
While several countries, including the UK, France, and Germany, have affirmed their willingness to contribute to securing the area, they have ruled out direct military involvement. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has assured that the ongoing military operation against Iran, now in its fifth week, is “going very well,” despite increasing uncertainties about regional stability and the cohesion of Western allies.
